Glowing Text

Name Plate

I created this piece in Cinema 4d. This is an unaltered render (no photoshop). To create this I found vector logos of companies like Apple, Vans, PS3, Xbox 360, and Infiniti. I then typed things about myself and what I do and outlined them in Illustrator so I could then bring them into Cinema 4d to extrude the vectors to generate depth. I then painstakingly created the glowing name as well as my website. I will also be putting a photoshoped version at a later date. Let me know what you think!

Project 7: Dreams, Nightmares, Fantasies

This project displays my struggles with my car including accidents, the money involved, and the overall frustration it had caused me. I view the match as a symbol of life going up in smoke with everything in the smoke being the cause of everything going up in smoke.

Purpose of Project:

1. Use a dream, nightmare, or fantasy as the inspiration for a collage you will create in Adobe Photoshop.

2. Use at least 5 images for this collage. 2 of the images must be scanned items. The items you scan can be cutouts from magazines, maps, tickets, receipts, printed photographs,everyday objects, or found items. The scanned items can be natural or man-made but make sure that they are non-abrasive so they do not scratch the scanners. Remember, when you scan, you must scan your images in at 300 ppi at the size you want the images to be. The other images can be taken from digital photographs you own or take or from online stock images (please do not use Google images).

3. Work in an 8 1/2 x 11” (horizontal or vertical) format. Copy and paste from your resources into a master PSD file. Be sure you do not replace your original resources as you edit and work on this document. Right now you should be working in 300ppi, RGB, PSD.

4. Use the tools and techniques that we covered in class to silhouette and manipulate your images. Combine grayscale and color imagery. You may repeat images, and use different selections from images. You may add text and drawing if you would like to do so.

Project 6: Cameraworks

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Purpose of Project:

1. Use a digital camera to photograph an outdoor or indoor scene from a variety of angles. Shoot in the largest file size that your camera will allow.

2. Transfer the files to your computer and use Adobe Bridge to choose and organize your best photos. Use Camera Raw to improve the quality. Resave them as 300ppi.

3. Recreate the scene in Photoshop using geometrically-shaped pieces of the photographs. Start with a blank 8 1/2 x 11″, 300 ppi, RGB, PSD file (vertical or horizontal) and cut and paste pieces of your images into this. Be sure you do not replace your original resources as you edit and work on this document.

4. Your final image should be sized to fit into an 8 1/2 x 11” sized file, but cannot actually be 8 1/2 x 11.”  Utilize the background in the same way that David Hockney does.

5. The final image must be made up of a minimum of 16 separate images. The final image needs to be 300 ppi, RGB, PSD.

 

Project 5: Text and Image

Purpose of Project:

1. Use stock.xchng or stockvault.net to find and download 6 images of landscapes that are compelling to you. These images must be at least 300ppi at 4″ x 6″.

2. After you download them, open the images in Photoshop. Resize them so they are 300ppi. Convert the color mode to CMYK.

3. Create 6 new PSD documents that are 300 ppi, CMYK, 4″ x 6″. Copy and paste your original images into these documents. In order to get your images to fit the required size, you may move the image layers around to reposition the images, or scale them down proportionally, or both. Use your judgment to create an interesting composition within the frame allowed.

4. Using Ed Ruscha as your inspiration, create an intriguing word or phrase to go with each of the landscapes. Use the type tool in Photoshop to set each phrase in a different way on top of the landscape. Pay attention to how the words, the image, and the way you set the text can create different meanings.

Project 4: Men and Women of Letters

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Purpose of project:

1. Take a photo of your face using Photo Booth.

2. Choose one typeface from the list that you think suits you. You should consider both your personality and your facial features when you make this decision. Consult the photograph if it helps.

3. Create a 7″ x 7″ CMYK document in Illustrator and place the photograph into a base layer to use as a guide. Scale this up or down so that your face fits into the allotted space.

4.  Using Roberto De Vicq De Cumptich’s work as your guide, use only the letters of your first and last name (you can use your nickname if you want) to construct a self-portrait.

5. You may rotate, reflect and repeat letters. You may increase or decrease the size of the type depending on what is necessary, but please use points to do so. You may use different styles of the typeface to create emphasis. You should not distort type in any way. Try to use all of the letters. You may use punctuation, but try not to rely on it. Your features will likely become exaggerated—that’s ok, be expressive!

6. You must use black letters on a white background. You can use one CMYK swatch as an accent color. Carefully consider how you use this so that it does not detract from the main focus of this assignment—how the type is used.

 

Project 3: Physical and Digital Layers

Purpose of Project:

1. Select 4 sheets of 6 x 6″ colored paper from the stack provided. Cut a square window into a larger sheet of paper so that you can move the colored sheets around and experiment with different designs. Cut, shift, and overlap the elements to produce a collage.

2. Scan this collage into your computer and save it as a 150ppi, RGB, JPG.

3. Create a 6 x 6″ document in Illustrator and place the image in illustrator.

4. Translate the collage into digital layers by using the shape tool and creating new shapes with the pen tool. Each physical layer should be a separate layer in the digital file with the original file in the bottom layer. Lock this layer so it does not move and turn it on and off as necessary. When you are done tracing, turn it off. Remember that the order of your layers determines what comes in front of what. Use rules to line up the alignment of your shapes. Use the colors that are available in the default RGB swatches.

5. Generate 4 new compositions by digitally changing the color, scale, transparency, orientation, and position of the digital layers. You should save a new version of the original file each time and work off of that.

Project 2: Circle, Square, Triangle

Purpose of Project:

1. Copying and pasting the shapes from the artboard at the top, create 6 identifiable objects using these simple geometric shapes. Focus on form and universal readability. Utilize both stroke and fill.

2. Some guidelines:

You may

– adjust scale, stroke size, and rotation
– turn the fill and stroke on or off
– crop or duplicate the shapes
– use shape modes and pathfinders

You may not

– create new shapes
– use the line tool
– use any color other than black and white
– crop any way other than a straight line.

3. When you are done creating your objects, group the individual objects that make up each and use the alignment buttons to center everything exactly in the middle of each artboard.

Project 1: Point, Line, Pencil, Brush

Purpose of Project:

1. Choose 3 sets of contrasting words from the list. Some examples are: delight/dismay, frustration/triumph, infatuation/loathing.

2. In Illustrator, create an 11 x 8 1/2″ document with 6 art boards in 2 columns

3. For the 1st set of words use the pen tool, the line tool, the arc line tool, or some combination of all three to construct each word in an emphatic, expressive way. You may only use a black stroke but you are allowed to change the weight of the stroke.

4. For the 2nd set of words, use the pencil or brush tool this time to construct each word in an emphatic and expressive way. Again, explore using each tool either separately or in combination. Try using the stylus. Explore the use of the different brush strokes and weights. Again, only use a black stroke.

5. For the 3rd set of words use any combination of the tools.
